Program Note:
A Light Curve is a graph that maps brightness vs. time. The rotational period of objects in space can be estimated by the time between peaks in brightness.
This piece takes inspiration from Kepler-186, a star system that is 500 light-years from earth. Like our solar system, the five planets in Kepler-186 orbit a central star. The distance from this star, along with the Earth-sized proportions of planet Keplar-186f make it potentially habitable.
Many of the musical ideas are inspired by NASA recordings of objects in space. The pulsating, syncopated rhythmic ostinato that is heard scattered throughout this piece references a recording in which the light curve of Kepler star KIC12268220C was converted to sound waves. Like a light curve, this piece fluctuates between dark and bright sound worlds, with ever-changing textures that reflect the actively evolving nature of the objects in space.
